Past the group of college kids by the window. Past the off-duty cop with the visible badge on his belt. Past the older couple who looked kind and safe and exactly like the kind of strangers children are taught to approach.

She walked past all of them.

And stopped at his table.

Marcus Hale was three bites into a burger he hadn’t tasted when he heard it.

“Sir.”

One word. But something in the frequency of it — something in the register that exists below language, where the body understands things before the mind does — made him set the burger down.

He looked up slowly.

She was maybe seven. Dark hair pulled into a ponytail that was coming loose on one side. Pink jacket with a small star on the lapel. She was holding a paper cup in both hands so tightly her knuckles had gone pale.

Her eyes were the eyes of an animal that has identified a predator and is deciding whether to run.

Marcus set his food down completely.

“Hey,” he said. Quietly. Like approaching something fragile. “You okay?”

Her lips parted. She looked over her shoulder — a fast, terrified glance — then back at him.

“Is everything okay?” she whispered.

The question made no sense. Except that it made complete sense, because it wasn’t really a question. It was a test. A code. A thing she’d been taught to say to see how someone responded.

Marcus felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up.

“No,” he said carefully. “Tell me what’s happening.”

She leaned forward. Her voice dropped to barely a sound.

“Sir.” A breath. “He is not my father.”

Marcus was on his feet before he’d decided to stand.

Not fully — he caught himself, kept it slow, kept it unthreatening. He shifted to the edge of his seat and reached out one hand, palm up, the way you’d reach toward a bird.

“Come here,” he said. “Come around this side. Stay behind me.”

She moved instantly — like she’d been waiting for exactly those words — and pressed herself against the booth behind him, her small hands gripping the back of his jacket.

Marcus didn’t turn around. He kept his eyes forward and let his peripheral vision do the work.

The restaurant was loud. Lunch rush. Trays clattering, kids crying, the fryer hissing behind the counter. But he filtered it the way he’d been trained to filter noise — pulling signal from static — and found what he was looking for within four seconds.

A man in a suit near the far counter.

Late thirties. Clean-cut. Expensive watch. The kind of man who looked like he belonged everywhere, which was exactly how those men operated.

He was watching Marcus’s table.

And when he realized Marcus was watching back, something moved across his face — not guilt, exactly. Calculation.

“Don’t move,” Marcus said quietly, without turning. “Stay exactly where you are.”

“Okay,” the girl breathed.

“What does he look like? The man.”

“Gray suit. He has a phone in his left hand.”

“I see him.” Marcus kept his voice level. “How long has he been with you?”

“Since the parking lot.” Her voice was barely a thread. “He said my mom sent him. But my mom never sends anyone. She told me she never would.”

Smart mother. Marcus thought it without saying it.

“What’s your name?”

“Lily.”

“Okay, Lily. I need you to do one thing for me. I need you to not look at him. Keep your eyes on me. Can you do that?”

“Yes.”

The man in the suit took one step toward them. Then stopped. Reassessing.

Marcus shifted his weight forward.

That was when Lily’s hand came around his side.

She was pointing at his left hand — the one resting on the table. At the tattoo across the back of it. Black ink, slightly faded at the edges. A wolf’s head in profile, detailed and deliberate, surrounded by a ring of coordinates.

Her small finger was shaking.

“My mother told me,” Lily whispered. “She said if I was ever in trouble — if I was ever really scared and I didn’t know who to trust—” She paused. Steadied her voice. “She said look for this sign. She said the person wearing it will help me.”

Marcus stopped breathing.

He looked at the tattoo. His tattoo. The one he’d gotten at twenty-two in a base town in Germany, in a parlor run by a veteran who gave the same design to every member of a unit that no longer officially existed.

There were eleven men who carried that mark.

He turned his head slowly and looked at the girl’s face.

“What is your mother’s name?” His voice came out lower than he intended.

Lily looked up at him.

“Sarah,” she said.

The restaurant noise didn’t actually fade. But something happened to Marcus’s hearing — some internal volume control that the body engages when the world shifts beneath it — and the fryers and the children and the trays all went very far away.

Sarah.

Sarah Voss. Twenty-nine years old the last time he’d seen her. Standing in a doorway in Ramstein, holding a coffee cup with both hands, telling him she’d be fine, telling him not to worry, telling him the thing people say when they’ve already decided to disappear before you can watch them do it.

He had looked for her for four years.

He had stopped looking because stopping was the only way to survive not finding her.

And now her daughter — her daughter who had her mother’s eyes and her mother’s specific, careful bravery — was pressed against his back in a fast-food restaurant, holding his jacket, trusting him with her life because Sarah had told her to.

Because Sarah had always known, somehow, that it would come to this.

The man in the gray suit took another step forward.

Marcus stood. Fully this time. All six-two of him, with the particular stillness of someone who has been in rooms far more dangerous than this one and walked out of all of them.

“Lily,” he said quietly.

“Yeah?”

“How did your mom know I’d be here?”

A pause.

“She said you eat at this restaurant every Tuesday.”

Marcus closed his eyes for exactly one second.

Then he took out his phone.

“Stay behind me,” he said. “I’m going to make a call, and then we’re going to walk out the front door together, and I promise you — I promise you — nothing is going to happen to you.”

“Do you know my mom?” Lily asked.

Marcus looked at the wolf on his hand. At the coordinates that pointed to a valley he would never forget. At the ink that connected eleven men who had promised each other, once, that the bond didn’t end when the mission did.

“Yeah,” he said. “I do.”

The man in the gray suit’s hand moved toward his jacket.

Marcus’s eyes locked on him across the restaurant.

“Don’t,” Marcus said.

Just that. One word. Across the noise and the distance and the crowded Tuesday lunch rush.

The man in the suit went still.

She chose him because of the tattoo.
