PART 2: The Woman in Gold<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The word tore straight through her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman stared at the little girl like the whole room had vanished around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her lips parted, but no sound came out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she looked down at the open watch again, at the tiny photo, at the child standing beside her in torn clothes and hungry silence, and her whole body began to shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGrandma?\u201d she repeated, barely able to breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The little girl nodded, crying harder now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy mommy said you would know the watch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman pushed her chair back so fast it scraped the floor. Heads turned, but she didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She dropped to her knees in that shining restaurant, right there beside the child, sequins and diamonds and all her pride suddenly meaning nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat happened to her?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The girl clutched the edge of the table, trying to stay brave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe got sick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman covered her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe told me not to be scared,\u201d the little girl said, voice trembling. \u201cShe said if I found you, I should give you the watch and say she never stopped waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That broke whatever was left in the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tears spilled down her face. Real tears. The kind no one in that room had probably ever seen from her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI thought she hated me,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The girl shook her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe kept your picture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman closed her eyes for one second like the pain was too big to stand inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she reached out slowly, giving the child time to pull away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the girl didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She stepped forward instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman touched her dirty cheek with trembling fingers, then pulled her into her arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The little girl finally let herself cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was scared,\u201d she whispered into the woman\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI know,\u201d the woman said, holding her tighter. \u201cYou\u2019re not alone now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the girl lifted her face, eyes wet and tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMommy said there was one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman\u2019s heart seemed to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The child reached into her ragged shirt pocket and pulled out a folded paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe said to give you this only if you cried.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman unfolded it with shaking hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her eyes moved over the first line\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and her face changed completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not grief now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The little girl searched her face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman looked down at her, shattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s from your mother,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then even lower\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe says your father is still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
