{"id":2670,"date":"2026-09-16T08:05:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T08:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogig.site\/?p=2670"},"modified":"2026-09-16T08:05:57","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T08:05:57","slug":"next-part-66","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogig.site\/?p=2670","title":{"rendered":"NEXT PART"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PART 2<br>Polina stopped screaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside the cave, curled against the far wall, was a tiny baby gorilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was soaked, shivering and making a weak crying sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina stared at it in disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silverback carried her inside, lowered her carefully onto the dry stone floor, then immediately moved between her and the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For several seconds, Polina couldn&#8217;t understand what was happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She had been certain the animal was dragging her away to kill her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, it had brought her somewhere safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lightning flashed outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire jungle seemed to shake under the force of the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina slowly pushed herself upright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her ankle throbbed badly, but for the first time since seeing the gorilla, fear wasn&#8217;t the only thing she felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baby gorilla looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its tiny hands clutched its chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Polina noticed something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a fresh wound along its side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh God\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She reached toward her backpack, moving as slowly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silverback instantly turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its dark eyes locked onto her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay\u2026 okay. I&#8217;m not going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She slowly opened the bag and found a small first-aid kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gorilla watched every movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina took out clean gauze and antiseptic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she pointed at the baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, the animal couldn&#8217;t understand her words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But something in her voice seemed to calm it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silverback looked at the baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back at Polina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, it moved aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina crawled forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every movement sent pain through her ankle, but she kept going until she reached the baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up close, the wound looked worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn&#8217;t deep, but the skin had been badly scraped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the baby had fallen during the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe that was why the silverback had been so aggressive when it first saw her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina carefully cleaned the injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baby whimpered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately, the silverback stepped closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina&#8217;s heart stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEasy\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a few minutes, the wound was covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baby reached out and wrapped its fingers around Polina&#8217;s wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She almost cried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou poor thing\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silverback stared at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for the first time, Polina understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It hadn&#8217;t attacked her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It had seen that she was injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it recognized pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe that was why it had picked her up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside, the storm grew even worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water rushed past the cave entrance like a river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina looked toward the jungle and felt a chill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the gorilla hadn&#8217;t brought her here, she might have drowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She reached into her bag again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her satellite phone was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lost somewhere in the mud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That meant nobody knew where she was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her friends wouldn&#8217;t even realize something was wrong until nightfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina leaned back against the cave wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silverback sat near the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baby slowly crawled beside her and rested against her leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hours passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then suddenly, the silverback stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its entire body became tense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina noticed immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gorilla stared into the darkness outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strange sound came from somewhere beyond the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A low growl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina couldn&#8217;t see anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the silverback could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It stepped completely in front of the cave entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its shoulders rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its hands tightened against the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baby immediately pressed closer to Polina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is out there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she saw movement between the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two glowing eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Low to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another pair appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina&#8217;s breathing stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three animals were moving through the darkness toward the cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silverback suddenly released a deafening roar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sound echoed through the rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But whatever was outside didn&#8217;t leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the eyes kept coming closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina grabbed the baby gorilla and pulled it against her chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silverback turned its head once and looked directly at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For some reason, the look felt like a warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protect the baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then it stepped out into the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina watched its massive body disappear into the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A second later, the jungle exploded with screams, roars and crashing branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina covered the baby with her body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then everything went silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Completely silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She stared toward the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCome back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing moved outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then a shadow slowly appeared at the mouth of the cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina almost smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the smile vanished instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the creature walking into the cave\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">wasn&#8217;t the gorilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PART 3<br><br>Polina&#8217;s blood turned cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The creature stepping into the cave wasn&#8217;t the gorilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a large leopard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its soaked spotted coat clung tightly to its body. Water dripped from its whiskers as it slowly lowered its head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its eyes locked on the baby gorilla in Polina&#8217;s arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina stopped breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baby made a small frightened sound and buried its face against her chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina pulled it tighter against herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her injured ankle made escape impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was nowhere to run anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind her was solid rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In front of her stood one of the most dangerous predators in the jungle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leopard took another step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina grabbed the only thing within reach \u2014 a metal flashlight from her backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her hand shook so badly she could barely hold it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStay back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leopard obviously didn&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It moved closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGO!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She threw a small rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It bounced harmlessly beside the animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leopard barely reacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten feet away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina&#8217;s heart hammered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She knew she had almost no chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when she looked down at the terrified baby clinging to her shirt, something inside her changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less than a day ago, she had walked into this jungle believing she knew everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now she was injured, lost and protecting the baby of the animal she had once thought was trying to kill her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leopard crouched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina recognized the movement immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was preparing to jump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She raised the flashlight like a weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCOME ON!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leopard sprang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina screamed and threw herself over the baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then something enormous exploded through the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A deafening roar filled the cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leopard was knocked sideways before reaching her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silverback was back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mud covered its body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a fresh scratch across one shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it stood between Polina and the leopard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gorilla slammed both hands against the ground and roared again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leopard hissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For several terrifying seconds, neither animal moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the gorilla stepped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its body looked enormous inside the narrow cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leopard backed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gorilla roared one final time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leopard turned and disappeared into the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina remained frozen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the silverback turned toward her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baby immediately scrambled from Polina&#8217;s arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It rushed across the cave and grabbed the gorilla&#8217;s leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silverback lowered one massive hand and gently touched the baby&#8217;s back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina couldn&#8217;t stop the tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou came back\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gorilla looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, she wasn&#8217;t afraid of those eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She saw something completely different now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The storm continued for another hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then gradually the thunder moved farther away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rain became softer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morning light began filtering through the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina knew she couldn&#8217;t stay there forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her ankle had swollen badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She needed help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But without the satellite phone, she had no way to call anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She reached into her backpack one last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First-aid supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she heard something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very faint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina lifted her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHELLO?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She listened again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone shouting in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHELP!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina screamed until her throat burned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOVER HERE!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gorilla suddenly stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It looked outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina heard the voices again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Closer now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her friends had reported her missing the previous evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At sunrise, local guides and rescue workers had started searching along the route toward the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHELP!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina shouted again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time somebody answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hear you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina burst into tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rescue team appeared between the trees several minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three men approached carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then all three stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had seen the gorilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One rescuer immediately raised his hands, warning the others not to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polina panicked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She crawled toward the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
