However, this turned out to be the luckiest $400 I had ever spent.

Four hundred dollars was two weeks of groceries in my house. It was the electric bill and enough left over to put something toward next semester’s tuition.

It was not dinner.

At least, not to people like me.

I had moved to a neighboring state for college, close enough to visit home when I could afford the trip but far enough that every emergency felt unbearable.

It was not dinner.

I had been waitressing at a restaurant near campus for almost a year, balancing evening shifts with classes and sending whatever I could spare home.

My mother and I had always been close, even though affection didn’t come naturally to her. Evelyn was stern, orderly, and proper about everything.

She planned appointments weeks in advance, kept every receipt in a labeled folder, and called me at precisely eight every Sunday evening. Even her kitchen towels had assigned places.

A private detective wanted money we didn’t have.

That was why her disappearance made no sense.

Four months earlier, she had vanished without packing a suitcase, or leaving so much as a note. Her purse, phone, clothes, and medication were all still at home.

Everyone who knew her agreed that walking away without telling anyone was the last thing Evelyn would ever do.

I returned home and spent days speaking to the police, but they had little to offer beyond vague assurances. She was an adult, there was no clear evidence of violence, and every possible lead seemed to end before it began.

That was why her disappearance made no sense.

A private detective wanted money we didn’t have.

So I did what I could.

I printed hundreds of missing-person posters and carried them wherever I went. I hung them in supermarkets, bus stations, laundromats, diners, and across my college campus.

I gave copies to my coworkers and kept several folded inside my bag in case I met someone new. Before every shift, I checked my phone and prayed that one of those posters had produced a miracle.

It never did.

I printed hundreds of missing-person posters.

Since Mom vanished, “whatever I could spare” had become almost everything. Searching for her wasn’t cheap. Neither was keeping our family afloat without her.

That Friday, a couple was seated in my section shortly after seven. They looked like they belonged at this restaurant: wealthy enough to treat the prices as decorative suggestions.

They were celebrating their anniversary, they told me.

They were polite—kinder than many of our regulars—but distracted.
