My sister spent $120,000 of our family’s trust fund on a car we never knew existed — and then she handed me a mysterious envelope that changed everything.

PART 2

The next morning, I barely slept. Rachel stayed silent, scrolling through the endless group messages about Mom’s condition, but I could see the worry in her eyes — the same worry clawing at me.

Matt arranged a confidential meeting in his office downtown Boise. He handed us a thick envelope containing certified trust papers — the official second trust Dad had set up 15 years ago. The executor’s name was a stranger: Logan Pierce.

“Logan Pierce? No one in the family’s ever mentioned him,” Rachel murmured.

“We’ll need to find him, but we have no leads,” I said, feeling the weight of the unknown. “Matt, can you help track him down?”

Matt nodded. “I’ll reach out to my contacts. But be careful. This trust sounds complicated, and someone hiding money like this might have motives you don’t want to cross.”

Days passed with no word. Then, the blocked caller struck again. This time, the voice was sharper.

“If you want to unlock the trust funds, you’ll meet me at The Copper Moon Cafe, downtown, Thursday at 7 PM. Alone.”

Rachel protested, “You shouldn’t go without me.”

“I have to,” I said grimly. “Whatever this is, it’s between me and this Logan. Maybe he’s testing us.”

Thursday night, the café was nearly empty. I scanned every patron as the clock ticked towards 7:15. Then a man in his late 40s, sharp suit, and dark glasses approached slowly.

“You must be Amy,” he said, voice low. “Logan Pierce.”

I nodded, heart hammering. “What do you want from me?”

He pulled out a worn leather folder and slid it across the table. “Your father and I had an arrangement. This trust manages a large portion of the family’s wealth, but your dad didn’t want it used until you and your sister proved you could handle the responsibility.”

“Why keep this secret from us?” I asked, clutching the key chain.

Logan’s eyes flicked to it. “Because money divides families. Your father wanted a way to measure your priorities. The Lamborghini purchase indicated Rachel might be reckless, but this letter and key means he wanted to test your ability to work together.”

My head spun. “How do we unlock the funds?”

“You need this letter signed by me, then the key will open a safe deposit box in a local bank,” Logan explained, handing me a document. “But… there’s one more condition. You’ll need to solve a puzzle your father left behind — a kind of final challenge.”

I stared at the paper. On it was a cryptic riddle:

“Under the lodge where birches fall,
Look beneath the widest hall.
A secret waits for open hands,
Follow the trail to find the plans.”

I looked back at Logan, then at Rachel, who had arrived silently behind me.

“This is bigger than we thought, Amy. Dad was testing us — and now we’re in the middle of his final game.”

Rachel’s voice was steady, but eyes fierce. “Let’s find the lodge and get this money. For Mom.”

I nodded, gripping the mysterious key and the letter. Whatever lay beneath the lodge could be the answer we needed — or the last piece in a very dangerous puzzle.

PART 3

Determined to solve Dad's puzzle, Rachel and I spent the weekend searching the family cabin and surrounding woods, a place speckled with birch trees. We knew Dad loved riddles, but this one was different — more cryptic, more urgent.

“Under the lodge where birches fall,” Rachel read aloud, squinting into the map Dad had drawn years ago.

“ ‘Look beneath the widest hall,’ ” I repeated. “The lodge’s main hall, right?”

Inside the old lodge, dust motes floated in the late afternoon light. Running my hand along the polished wooden floor, I found a loose panel near the far wall — wider than the others.

Rachel’s hands trembled as she pried it open. Inside was a small metal box, locked tight but with a hole just the right size for Dad’s key.

My breath caught as I slid the ornate key into the lock. It clicked open.

Inside was another letter and a flash drive.

“Amy and Rachel,
If you’ve found this, you’ve passed the first test. The money you seek isn’t just cash — it’s records and legal documents proving your father’s assets and rightful control over the family trust.

Use these wisely. Protect your family.

Love, Dad.”

Plugging the flash drive into my laptop, I found scanned legal documents revealing that Dad had acquired several properties and investments, none of which Rachel or I knew about. Hidden assets worth millions.

The weight of the discovery was overwhelming, but relief hit me too. Mom’s medical bills, Rachel’s reckless spending — these could all be managed now.

That night, I confronted Rachel. “Why didn’t you tell me about the car? And why were you so secretive?”

She looked guilty. “I was scared we’d lose everything and that you’d blame me. And… I wanted to protect Mom from stress.”

I sighed, realizing we’d both been carrying secret burdens.

With the documents and money secured, Rachel and I approached the bank the next day. The manager handed us the key to the sealed safe deposit box, holding the final legal documents for the trust fund.

“This is your family’s legacy now,” he said.

As we left the bank, Rachel turned to me, the tension between us easing.

“Maybe Dad’s final test wasn’t about the money,” she said softly, “but about whether we could trust each other again.”

I smiled, feeling the truth of her words. Our family had survived betrayal, secrets, and fear — and now, together, we could face whatever came next. For Mom, for Dad, and for us.
